Can My Pet Get COVID-19?
Pets are the best. They provide so much love and companionship, and they’ve been especially great to have during the year of the pandemic.
We’ve had to make sure and protect ourselves from contracting the virus, but is it possible that we need to protect our sweet little pals from getting COVID-19, too? Our team at AFC Urgent Care Hixson is here to inform and set your mind at ease.
Animals Getting COVID-19 Is a Myth, Right?
Near the beginning of the pandemic, you might have heard of two house cats and a tiger in New York contracting the virus. This was really scary news. If a virus could spread among animals that humans could also catch, we’d really be doomed, right?
Well, don’t fret. The CDC, along with many other health organizations, has since stated that there is no sufficient evidence that suggests that pets can be carriers of COVID-19. The best thing you can do for your little companions during the pandemic is to make sure they’re cared for and get enough exercise.
Ways to Get Your Pet Moving
- Make them work for treats.
- Play fetch with your dog.
- Take your dog on frequent walks.
- Use a laser-pointer or something that interests your cat.
Can I Be Around My Pet If I Get the Virus?
It’s OK if you are, but just be a little less lovey, please. While research states that the coronavirus is not a big threat to their health, the CDC still recommends that you exercise caution when interacting with your pet.
Things you’ll want to avoid are kissing your pet, sharing food, letting them sleep in your bed or allowing them to frequently lick you.
Ways to Keep Your Home COVID-Free
- Wash your hands frequently and for at least 20 seconds.
- Wash your mask at least a couple times a week.
- Vacuum and sanitize often.
