February Is American Heart Month
February is American Heart Month. However, how much do you really know about heart disease? Test your knowledge on the subject today.
Heart Disease 101
Knowledge is power, especially when it comes to heart health. Learn the facts about heart disease.
• Did you know that one in every four deaths in the United States is caused by heart disease? That makes heart disease the most common cause of death among both American men and women.
• When you hear the term “myocardial infarction,” automatically think heart attack, as that’s the definition for the term. While you will probably hear people say “heart attack” more, it’s still important to know both terms.
• When sudden cardiac arrest occurs, the heart stops beating, which means oxygen-enriched blood has stopped flowing to major organs, including the brain. That’s why it’s important to seek medical attention ASAP. If you or someone you love experiences signs of a heart attack (such as shortness of breath, chest pain or vomiting), call 911 immediately!
