How Do I Treat the Flu?
We are sorry that you are sick! Being ill is never fun, and it can be especially hard if you still have to care for others and do daily tasks to keep your household running. Because you are a busy person, it is natural to want a quick fix for your symptoms!
Unfortunately, the flu is a viral illness that usually just has to run its course within a week or so, but there are some things you can do to feel better in the meantime. Our AFC Urgent Care Hixson team explains all things flu-related below, so read on.
Is It the Flu or Something Else?
It can be hard to distinguish between illnesses when you start to feel sick. Many common bacterial and viral infections produce similar symptoms, so it may be confusing to pinpoint what you contracted. This is where we can help! We have a rapid test available that can detect influenza within 15 minutes.
It can also be helpful to take note of how your symptoms progress over the course of a day or so. Illnesses like the common cold tend to develop over a period of a few days, while influenza symptoms typically appear suddenly and severely. The flu often causes a fever as your body has an immune response to the virus.
Flu Symptoms You Can Expect
- Fever
- Runny nose/congestion
- Sore throat
- Cough
- Muscle or body aches
Will OTC Medication Treat Influenza?
Since influenza is a viral illness, treatments like a round of antibiotics will not help you feel better. Your body just simply has to overcome the illness on its own! With proper rest, fluids and healthy foods, you can expect to feel better in about a week or two.
You can certainly take some OTC medication that is dedicated to relieving flu symptoms! Just remember that this type of medication is not curing your illness, but it simply offering some relief for the more severe symptoms. If you are in a higher risk category for severe illness, your doctor may be able to prescribe an antiviral drug to help you ward off serious complications.
