What's Causing Your Muscle Cramps? | Hixson, TN Walk-In Clinic
Sports season is here, and AFC Urgent Care Hixson wants you to be aware of muscle cramps so that they don’t get the best of your young athlete this season.
Avoiding Muscle Cramps
Muscle cramps occur for many different reasons, including:
- Dehydration
- Muscle overuse
- Muscle strain
- Nerve compression
Fortunately, there are things you can do to help your athlete avoid the discomfort associated with muscle cramps.
First, be sure he or she is drinking enough fluids. Being well-hydrated throughout the day—especially during a sporting event or practice—can help prevent muscle cramps.
Second, consume carbs the right way. If you don’t eat enough carbohydrates on a daily basis, you’re at a higher risk of muscle cramps, since carbs helps muscles contract and give your muscles the energy they need for a proper workout. As a result, most trainers recommend that athletes consume carbohydrates before and after a workout, especially if the activity lasts for an hour or longer.
Finally, remind your child to stretch before exercise. This will help muscles loosen up before the workout.
