Will the Flu Vaccine Protect Against COVID-19?
Unfortunately, no. While this year’s flu vaccine is one of the most important vaccines in recent history, it still doesn’t decrease your chances of getting COVID-19.
So, why is the flu vaccine so important, then? Read on as AFC Urgent Care Hixson explains.
Why Is the Flu Vaccine So Important?
The flu vaccine is important because it has been shown to reduce the risk of flu illness, hospitalization and death. Additionally, the flu vaccine works to keep those sick with the flu out of the hospitals and doctor’s offices and keeps healthcare resources open for those sick with COVID-19.
In short, until a COVID-19 vaccine is readily available for everyone, medical resources need to be prioritized for COVID-19 patients.
More Ways the Flu Shot Helps
- Lowers your flu risk
- Reduces your risk of flu-associated hospitalization
- Provides an important tool for those with chronic health conditions
- Helps protect women during and after pregnancy
- Lessens the severity of illness in those that do still get sick
Is There a COVID-19 Vaccine?
Thankfully, yes! But the vaccine isn’t available to everyone yet. Right now, local governments are distributing the vaccine in waves, depending on your job, age and health condition. To see where you fall in line, check Tennessee’s eligibility tool.
If you are not currently in line to get the vaccine, there are still ways you can stay safe! We’ve listed some basic health-safety precautions below.
Common Health-Safety Precautions
- Avoid large groups of people.
- Wear a mask over your nose and mouth when in public.
- Stay home if you feel sick.
- Stay socially distant from those that don’t live in your home.
- Wash your hands frequently with soap and water for at least 20 seconds.
- Avoid traveling long distances.
Even though the flu vaccine doesn’t protect against COVID-19, it’s still important to get! If you haven’t gotten yours yet, schedule an appointment ASAP at AFC Urgent Care Hixson.
