Our team at AFC Urgent Care Hixson knows you want to have fun outdoors this summer—and we want to help you do so safely! Read on for a look at how to protect your family when you’re out in the heat this summer.

Have Fun and Stay Cool

During the warmer months, people naturally gravitate to the outdoors. Whether spending time at the pool or simply enjoying dinner outside on the patio, many people spend a portion of every day outside. But with summer temperatures regularly headed above 90 degrees in east Tennessee, it’s important to take precautions related to the heat.

Heat-related illnesses can occur quickly, seemingly without warning. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, a person with a heat-related illness is likely to first experience muscle cramping, followed by other symptoms such as:

  • Increased sweating
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Weakness or fainting
  • Changes in pulse
  • Clammy, cold skin (heat exhaustion) or red, hot, moist skin (heat stroke)

Fortunately, there are things people can do to help protect themselves from heat-related illnesses.

First, it’s important to stay hydrated. By the time you feel thirsty, you could already be dehydrated. That’s why it’s important to sip water continuously throughout the day. Avoid caffeinated and alcoholic beverages, which can actually dehydrate your body, rather than replenishing its fluids. You can also include water-filled fruits and veggies in your diet, such as peppers, cucumbers, berries and melon.

Second, avoid being in the sun during the hottest part of the day, between the hours of 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., when the sun’s rays are the most intense. Try to spend the bulk of your time outdoors before or after those hours, which will allow you to enjoy the outdoors without being overwhelmed by heat.

Finally, remember to dress appropriately for the weather. Wear loose-fitting clothing that can help your body breathe easily during the hot, summer months, as well as a hat and sunglasses to protect your face and eyes from the sun. Remember, you want to have a fun summer without falling victim to the summer heat!
